A lotus does not open quietly. It rises through still water, breaks the surface, and unfolds with everything it has.

This bowl carries that moment.

A Carved Lotus, Cut by Hand

The body of this Jianzhan is not painted. The lotus is carved by hand into the clay before firing — petal by petal, layer by layer. Each cut catches the glaze differently, so the flower shifts in depth and shadow as you turn the bowl in your hand.
At the center, the lotus seed pod is raised in relief. Around it, petals open outward across the basin form. It is a scene of full bloom — wild, generous, alive. In Chinese, this motif is often described as 一塘和气 — a pond in harmony, where every living thing thrives together.

The Basin Form

This is a gang bei (basin cup) — wider and deeper than a standard tea bowl, with a gently flared rim and a rounded body that gathers light. It sits low and stable in the hand, with a generous 120ml capacity that suits solo tea sessions or slow mornings.
The interior glaze pools into a deep, near-black center, ringed with fine crystalline speckles — a natural effect of iron-rich glaze cooling in the kiln. The exterior carries a warm brown glaze that breaks over the carved petals, revealing lighter edges and darker recesses.

Made by Hand in Jianyang

Each bowl is thrown, carved, glazed, and fired by hand in Jianyang, Fujian — the birthplace of Jianzhan. The craft was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage of China in 2016.
The carved lotus is not a decal or a mold. It is cut into the leather-hard clay by the artisan’s hand. Slight variations in petal depth, glaze pooling, and surface texture are natural. No two bowls are identical.

A Symbol Worth Holding

In Chinese culture, the lotus is more than a flower. It grows from mud but rises clean. It represents purity, resilience, and harmony — the ability to bloom fully without losing yourself.
This bowl is for tea, but it is also for that idea. Set it on your tea table, fill it with oolong or pu-erh, and let the lotus open in your hand.
